The Bane Chronicles: Snippet

To help ring in the new year the fabulous Cassie Clare shared a snippet from the upcoming Bane Chronicles. Check it out!!

A note from Cassie:
The Bane Chronicles: Snippet

Happy New Year! And in honor of the new year a little snippet starring our favorite sparkly warlock before he was sparkly. From one of the stories of The Bane Chronicles, called What Really Happened in Peru. By me and Sarah Rees Brennan. Give her lots of love.

* * *

“Just don’t leave me here,” said Ragnor. “You have to swear, Bane.”

Magnus raised his eyebrows. “I give you my word of honor!”

“I mean it,” Ragnor told him. “I will find you. I will find whatever chest of absurd clothes you have brought with you. And I will bring a llama into the place where you sleep and make sure that it urinates on everything in the chest.”

“There is no need to get nasty about this,” Magnus said. “Don’t worry. I can teach you every word that you need to know right now. One of them is ‘fiesta.’”

Ragnor scowled. “What does that mean?”

“It means ‘party.’ Another important word is ‘juerga.’”

“What does that word mean?”

Magnus was silent.

“Magnus,” said Ragnor, his voice stern. “Does that word also mean ‘party’?”

Magnus could not help the sly grin that spread across his face. “I would apologize,” he said. “But I have no regrets.”

First place: Untitled by Amanda
Jem passed just before dawn.
Tessa fought back the urge to heave up what very little she had managed to keep down the past few days at the smell of smoke and tar in the air. She had never attended a Shadowhunter funeral before and was at a loss for words when she saw the white outfit set out before her.  Sophie’s hands shook as she helped her dress.
She didn’t register much after that, not that it mattered anyways. It wasn’t until a familiar hand brushed against her palm did she break out of her trance. She flinched at his touch and pulled away, her eyes darting around, taking in the pinched faces of those around her.
She could barely look at Will. He was like a shooting star, such beauty and tragedy set ablaze. His black hair looked like fresh ink rubbed raw against his face, such a stark contrast to his crisp white gear. She longed to hear his carefree voice speak out and joke, ‘well this is embarrassing, white after labor day?’ she could even see it in his eyes hidden behind the guilt and the longing. He didn’t joke though, instead he lowered his eyes and broke the silence.
“You’re leaving with Magnus tomorrow?”
“He’s the only family I have left. We share the same father after all.”
“Tessa, you belong here. At the Institute, we are your family.” Will urged, seizing her arm by the elbow and pulling them closer, forcing her to meet his gaze.
“I can’t stay there anymore. Magnus said he can teach me, help me accept who I am.” Tessa explained trying to pull away from him half-heartedly. She sighed, placing her hand on his, “We can’t be together, Will. It’ll be easier if I just disappear.”
“What am I suppose to do?”
“Go back to Wales with Cecily, at least for the wedding and don’t punch Gabriel.” She teased, pulling a brave face but she could feel her hands trembling.
“After that do what you do best, protect those you care about; be a Shadowhunter. Just be kind, Will and open your heart – you’ll have no trouble falling in love again, you’ll find a girl and you two will be so happy- ” She broke off, trying to calm herself. Will cupped her faced in his palms and tiled her head so she could see him clearly. He brushed his thumb against her cheek.
“I will never love another the way I love you. I belong to you as you belong to me; heart and soul.”
“And I will have to live with that knowledge long after you’re gone. Tell me Will, what should I say when they bury you?” Her eyes weighed down, pierced him. He brought their hands together and kissed her fingertips gently.
“You’ll tell them all of it; the good and the bad. Of Jem and his violin, Masquerade Balls, Jessie and her too tight dresses, Charlotte and Henry with his tailcoats on fire, your clockwork angel, but most of all you’ll tell them how we won and that you’re Tessa Gray. You need an eternity to do all the things you’re capable of; it’s just a pity that I won’t be able to see them all.” He laughed brokenly, looking at her like he had that night all those months ago when they escaped from the Dark Sisters.
Tessa smiled watery, as she tried to blink back tears. She pulled him in close, her arms wrapped around his neck as his arms clung to her middle.
“I love you.” She spoke softly in his ear as he crushed her tightly against him. “Not a day, William Herondale. There will not be a day that goes by that I will not love you more.” “Then, until that day.” Will pulled back, kissing her gently on her cheek before turning away towards the Institute.  Tessa watched him with one hand resting over her heart, it was only then that she noticed her angel was no longer ticking. It lay dormant against her chest, just like her heart.

Second place: Incurability by Katie Teggart
A flash of blue sparks and then darkness—
The rose window of the church cast kaleidoscopic hues of sapphires, golds and emeralds onto the bare flagstone floor, illuminating the crumpled figure in its centre. A body he knew like his own, one which had never seemed small or fragile, and now looked as delicate as ashes: the body of his Magnus.
Like a worshipper Alec fell to his knees beside him. He didn’t know how long he knelt there afraid to breathe; when he finally did, it escaped in a rush, somewhere between a sob and a scream, the sound of his heart breaking. In it were all the things he had never said, all the wrongs he’d done, accumulating to one horrifying truth which tore at him from the inside; this was his fault. Mea culpa, the words resonated through the echoic church walls, every breath he took another gasp of pain, released only with sound of dire agony. He pulled Magnus onto his knee, cradling him and smelling that stupid grapefruit smell that suited Magnus so well and hearing Magnus muttering about smudging his make-up—
Alec gasped.
Magnus, whose eyes were open, blinked up at him with a mixture of gladness and incredulity. “Seriously,” he said. “Your tears, my glitter, do not mix.”
Alec stared in wonderment, “You’re—you’re not—”
“I love it when you stutter,” Magnus smiled brilliantly.
Alec let go of him—
Standing, Alec shouted through gritted teeth. “You’re not DEAD?”
“No, you moron,” Magnus said brushing dust from his jeans. “Do I look dead to you? Am I doing deadish things? Do dead guys look as good as me? Am I—” But Magnus never got a chance to finish, because Alec was on him, holding him and kissing him.
After a while, Alec gently detached himself. “You’re a git.” He said, though his heart wasn’t really in it. “I thought you’d…”
“Killed myself?” Magnus guessed, absently brushing Alec’s hair aside. “Alexander, look at me.”
Alec did, drinking him in, all of him; His always perfect hair, his slender neck, the hollow between his collar bones, his lips, his nose, those green eyes…“Your eyes!” he breathed, realising. “They’re…different.”
“My warlocks mark?” Magnus smiled, “I guess it worked.”
“I don’t understand...”
Magnus indicated a small blue book lying face down on the floor; The Book of the White.
Alec was confused, “Clary gave that to you to save her mother…”
“I had my own reasons for wanting it.” Magnus said. “I’ve done many things in my time, but I’ve never grown old. I want to grow old with you, Alexander.”
“Can’t you reverse it?” Alec asked reluctantly after a pause.
“No,” Magnus spoke a little sadly. “Like loving you, my new mortality’s incurable.”
“In Alicante, when Clary was on the dais in the Accords hall, I saw you standing there.” Alec said because he needed to say it, “I never told you, but I lo—”
“Hush,” Magnus whispered against Alec’s mouth. “I know.”

Third place: Clockwork Soldier by Vicky
The air was thick with the taste of ash, enough to make him choke on the bittersweet aftermath. An angry sky loomed above the dilapidated bridge that had once been the pride of Victorian London, spitting out colors of red and orange to set the ground ablaze. The city streets ran red with the blood of Downworlders and Nephilim alike, and although he would never fight beside his brethren again in quite the same manner, it gave him a sense of peace to know they still cared.
Not much longer now,Jem thought to himself as he gazed out upon the remnants of Mortmain’s clockwork army. One by one they fell by Raziel’s hand, their mechanical parts mixing with rivers of crimson against the broken cobblestones, as if Heaven itself had unleashed an apocalyptic war. Frightened Mundanes gathered in the city center, their heads bowed in prayer; even they understood the significance of what was occurring—the end of the world as they knew it.
He’d done everything he could to assist William and the others before they’d taken matters into their own hands. A price had to be paid for what was accomplished, and Jem had sacrificed himself for that of the greater good. When he’d taken that last breath upon the Institute steps, he’d never felt such desperation. It permeated the air around him, suffocating his very lungs. William, Tessa, even Charlotte, they had all begged for an end to his suffering knowing full well it was against his wishes. But it was the love he held for his Parabatai that allowed Jem to look beyond that of his own reflection, to see the grand design with more clarity than ever before. He could not withstand this war and protect those he cared for without relinquishing part of himself and the toxins that controlled his body.
The Silent Brothers called him the wingless angel. Magnus labeled him a soldier. “To give up that part of you which is human for the benefit of others is not a weakness,” the warlock had whispered as he’d performed the spell. “You will live to soldier on.”
It was the whimsical Downworlder that now came to his aid once again, his glittered hand resting lightly on Jem’s shoulder as they both stared down into the black water below the bridge.
“It’s time, James. Let us finish this once and for all,” said Magnus with a soft sigh.
“And then where will we go?” he asked quizzically, turning to face the man would become his closest friend and confidant after all else had perished.
“The future isn’t written. We havethepresent to contendwith first,” Magnus replied with the slightest hint of a smile.
In that moment, Jem saw Heaven reflected in Magnus’ cat-like eyes. If he truly was the son of the Devil—a fallen angel in his own regard—then perhaps Magnus was more Nephilim than Demon after all. He would follow this warlock to the ends of the earth.

Spanish Winners:

First Place:  Romi Morguen

- ¡Cuidado!
- Magnus no...
- ¡Jace, ahora!
- ¡No pienso dejarte!
- Va--mos...vete... - susurró Magnus.
- ¡No! ¡¿cómo voy a..?!
- ¡No puedo dejarle!
Third Place: Candelaria Perez

_Jem… Se suponía que… No deberías… Tu salud…_ balbuceó torpemente Will, todavía confundido.

_No te despidas Will. No todavía…_

Music Monday #13: "Fight Inside" by Red

I love alternative rock music. As a teen of the 90's grunge scene, I always crave for songs with edge. Thanks for my friend @SRFloyd93 on Twitter, I found a new band I could totally hear on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack. The name is Red (stylized as RED and R3D) an alternative rock band out of Nashville, Tennessee.
This particular song, "Fight Inside", is actually off their 2008 album Innocence and Instinct and is the Music Monday song of the week:

The band's lineup consists of singer Michael Barnes, guitarist Anthony Armstrong, bassist Randy Armstrong and drummer Joe Rickard. They are known for their Christian rock music which incorporates other sounds such as alternative rock, hard rock, heavy metal and post-grunge.

To date, Red has released three studio albums: End of Silence (2006), Innocence & Instinct (2009), and Until We Have Faces (2011). The first two albums earned the group Grammy Award Nominations for Best Rock Gospel Album while Until We Have Faces had a No. 2 debut on Billboard 200.

You can check their music out on their site and follow them on Twitter: @redmusiconline.

Clockwork Princess Snippet

Cassie posted this to her tumblr as an end of the year present!

Clockwork Princess snippet: End of 2012 present!

Because I love you all, here is a snippet from Clockwork Princess for the end of the year. Also because I love you all it’s under a tag because it’s SPOILERY.

This should keep you guys busy for a while. :)

Jem and Tessa …

Tessa reached to brush the damp hair from his forehead. He leaned into her touch, his eyes closing. “Jem—have you ever—” She hesitated. “Have you ever thought of ways to prolong your life that are not a cure for the drug?”

At that his eyelids flew open. “What do you mean?”

She thought of Will, on the floor of the attic, choking on holy water. “Becoming a vampire. You would live forever—”

He scrambled upright against the pillows of the bed. “Tessa, no. Don’t—you can’t think that way.”

“Is the thought of becoming a Downworlder truly so horrible to you?”

“Tessa …” He exhaled slowly. “I am a Shadowhunter. Nephilim. Like my parents before me. It is the heritage I claim, just as I claim my mother’s heritage as part of myself. It does not mean I hate my father. But I honor the gift they gave me, the blood of the Angel, the trust placed in me, the vows I have taken. Nor, I think, would I make a very good vampire. [redacted for spoilers] I would no longer be Will’s parabatai, no longer be welcome in the Institute. No, Tessa. I would rather die and be reborn and see the sun again, than live to the end of the world without daylight.”

“A Silent Brother, then,” she said.

His eyes softened slightly. “The path of Silent Brotherhood is not open to me.”

Clockwork Princess Tour Dates and more!

Cassandra Clare has been gone for a while because she was on vacation. Well she is finally back and with great new, the Clockwork Princess tour dates!!
"Clockwork Princess tour: March
Happy holidays, everyone!
I haven’t been posting much lately, leaving poor Sarah and Holly to do it in my place, mostly because I was on an atoll in the Indian Ocean. However I return with (I hope) excitin’ news: I finally have the info about where I’ll be going for my North American Clockwork Princess tour in March.*
(*I don’t yet know if I’ll be touring outside the US and Canada. Next year is going to be a really busy year, so I will try, but we’ll see. I’ll update when I do know that information.)
And this will not be just a regular tour, either. I’ll be traveling around the country in a fancy bus that is wrapped in graphics from Clockwork Princess and the City of Bones movie. The bus will be making stops at bookstores, schools and libraries for booksigning events. Special guests will be joining me — the co-authors of the Bane Chronicles, Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson, will be with me for quite a few of the stops: they’ll be emceeing events, helping me with trivia contests, making video diaries from the road, and in general making the tour a more fun and exciting experience. We’ll be showing the teaser trailer at the events and maybe even a bit more exclusive sneak peeks at the City of Bones movie. And there will be giveaways — art postcards, rune jewelry, and all sorts of cool stuff.

Here is the schedule and the various bookstore guidelines (rules for events are set by the stores themselves, and if you’re ever unclear on how many books you can bring to be signed, etc. please call the store and ask them!), so be sure to come out to one of the events and say hi. And be sure to check back for updates, a sneak peek at what the designed bus will look like, and more in the coming weeks!"

Music Monday #12: "I Feel It In My Bones" by The Killers

It's not Christmas to me without a new holiday song by The Killers (@thekillers on Twitter). They've been dishing out their unique brand of cheer for several years now. Their newest Christmas track is a twisted little tune as a letter to Santa from Killers frontman Brandon Flowers. It's totally something I could see Jace writing to Santa this Christmas:

What can I say about The Killers? They are my FAVORITE BAND ever. I do not exaggerate. I've been following them since Hot Fuss came out back in 2004. So, it's not a stretch that I'd add The Killers once, if not several times, to my Music Monday selections. Here's some fast facts about the band:
The Killers are an American rock band that was formed in 2001, by Brandon Flowers (lead vocals, keyboards) and Dave Keuning (guitar, backing vocals). Mark Stoermer (bass, backing vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums, percussion) would complete the current line-up of the band in 2002. The band originated in Las Vegas, Nevada. The name The Killers is derived from a logo on the bass drum of a fictitious band portrayed in the music video for the New Order song "Crystal".

The group has released four studio albums, Hot Fuss (2004), Sam's Town (2006), Day & Age (2008) and Battle Born (2012). They have also released one compilation album, Sawdust (2007) and one live album titled Live from the Royal Albert Hall (2009). To date, the band has sold over 6 million albums in the United States, over 5 million albums in the United Kingdom, and a total of 16 million worldwide to date.

You can check out all their music on

If you have a suggestion for Music Monday, be sure to tweet your picks to @TMI_Institute. Your song selection might be the next spotlighted on the site!

So, here are the best Shadowhunter tweets for the week of December 16-22, 2012:
